Science 6

(Updated 8/15/23)

Course Description for Science 6:

The sixth grade focus in science is to get a bit of a taste of life science, physical science, and earth science. In addition, the nature of science is addressed (scientific method). At times, science and social studies may be integrated. Keep in mind that since students are sometimes learning about both science and social studies simultaneously in an integrated fashion, points for some activities or tests could be entered into both subjects (science AND social studies).

In Earth science students may learn about such things as Earth’s structure, plate tectonics, natural disasters, landforms, theory of continental drift, water cycle, ocean current effect on climate, cause of tides, weather, pollution, and so forth.

Students may learn about much in life science including: natural resources, human land use, pollution, ecosystems, cells, parts of cells, plant and animal cells, how cells create and use energy, how cells work together for life processes, traits, adaptations, how organisms evolve, etcetera.

Finally, students may learn a bit in physical science which may include information about:  matter, atoms, elements, molecules, compounds, the periodic table, physical properties of matter, and chemical properties of matter.

Material Expectations:

Students are expected to have a school provided 3-ring binder (1 inch - not bulky & not fancy) to keep all of their papers in.  I will have subject dividers to share with students so they can keep their binders organized and divided into the two subjects. They should always be prepared  with two or more pencils as well (mechanical would be best; the school provides some of these).

Blended Learning:

In science, blended learning will be used which combines online educational materials and online interaction with traditional classroom learning. The student has some control over time, place, path, or pace. For much of the online portion, MobyMax Science will be used.

Main Resources Used For Class:

MobyMax Science - allows students to progress as quickly as they like, has students think and discover rather than just be told, is interactive

BrainPOP - has science content, mainly videos, that engage students

Glencoe Science An Introduction to the Life, Earth and Physical Sciences - textbook

HMH Social Studies World Geography 2019- textbook

HMH Social Studies World Geography Guided Reading Workbook- workbook

Generation Genius - videos, activities, quizzes, reading material, etcetera

Science Homework:

As long as students are on task and putting forth much effort, there should not be much science homework. However, if students are not staying focussed or are falling behind, especially on the online portion of work, homework may be necessary. Students can be working on science in other 6th grade periods, as long as they have their regular work finished. Students can work on MobyMax Science at home as much as they need to. Another option would be to come in on the Fridays when teachers have “Teacher Workdays,” but that would need to be individually scheduled with me.

Grading:

Grades are not weighted in science. I use a point system. Online lessons are usually worth 10 points, whereas the online tests are usually worth 5 points. Other activities/assignments are assigned points based on the rigor of the task etcetera.
